The housing market collapsed in 2008. Roughly 30% of Costa Del Sol's economy disappeared in a matter of months. Now, along the coast, are thousands of "Se Vende" signs - For Sale. Entire apartment complexes - 500 units and more- have been abandoned along the coast. They are shuttered hulks of greed. There has been a price paid for the remarkable growth they witnessed in the 90's. Entire mountains and valleys have been replaced with golf and apartment complexes, protected land replaced with abandoned villas, and numerous elected officials entrusted with protecting Spain are on trail for accepting bribes and selling their country to unscrupulous developers.
